Wouldn't the Chevy Volt be considered a hybrid?

I went to Chevy's website and it says that the Volt can use gas. Wouldn't it technically be classified as a Hybrid then instead of an Electric car?

Yes, it is an electric hybrid vehicle but GM's promotional strategy is to accentuate the electric. The gas-powered onboard generator makes it a series hybrid, as opposed to a parallel hybrid which has a combustion engine and electric motor connected to the transmission.
