Which truck should I get, the Toyota Tacoma, or Chevy Silverado?

I own a 2001 Chevy Impala, and to reduce repair expenses, because I want to go offroading, and that I just want a new vehicle, I'm thinking of getting a new pickup truck. I know this isn't the time to get a toyota, but the purchase will be later this year. I'm not a big hauler, but I do want to off-road, and I want descent payload. I'm sorta leaning towards the tacoma because of the better gas mileage and lower cost, but I'm sorta image conscious about cars, and driving a little japanese truck may not be the best thing. I also think the overall package of the silverado might be better, and I want to contribute to the US economy with an american truck, but since I won't be towing a cage full of elephants, I'm not sure. It also has to be at least an extended cab because my buds will be in there, and I need adequate roominess. Overall for my needs, which truck would be better
