The Chevrolet Volt is blowing away all sales expectation with delivery of nearly 350 cars last month and GM claims they can sell as many as 10,000 cars in 2011. Not including the $750 billion dollars it cost to develop the Volt, each car costs GM $40,000 to build and the sticker price is about $41,000, earning GM a thousand dollars per car, assuming everyone will pay full retail for the car.
How many Volts will Government Motors need to build and over how many years, before development costs are amortized and GM makes a dime for the taxpayer and shareholder?
HINT: The Chevrolet Volt has a real manufacturing cost of $80,000 - $100,000 per car to build, if GM meets every single production and sales target.
