What's wrong with my 2004 Chevy Suburban? The fuel system? Something else?

The Suburban I have is the 1500. We have been having a problem with the engine just stopping as we are driving. Usually it happens around 1/2 tank of gas after we have been driving for a few hours or when it's very hot outside. The engine will be cooking along and then it appears to shut off, but it doesn't. When I get the truck stopped, the engine stops. When I try to restart it, it idles very rough and then shuts off again. After about 5 or 10 minutes, it will start normally and run normally for another 2 to 3 hours and the whole process starts over again.
Can anyone help me with this? Any suggestions on what to change? I've changed the fuel filter but don't know if I'm looking in the right area for the problem.
