Well I don't know about the average 17 year old, but I'd tell ya what I'd do. I'd be waving at you from my vette on the way to school! But then again, I'm not a head strong 17 year old anymore. I'm sure if I was set on doing something and my dad was trying to persuade me on otherwise, I may rebel against it even more because I'd want control of my own life and choices. At least your son or daughter has some direction... that's great. I know the world is a scary place, but good things can come out of being in the Marines and college can come later. Good luck.
