Then the gas engine in the car would turn on.

It is only an electric car for 40 miles, until the battery dies. Then the gas engine turns on and you use that until you recharge the battery.

The only ALL electric car is the Tesla Roadster, which needs to be recharged every 200 miles. Recharging takes at least 15 hours. Car costs $96,000.
