What does a random miss fire code mean for a 1998 chevy silverado whit 5.7 motor?

A P0300 OBD code indicates a random or multiple misfire. If the last digit is a number other than zero, it corresponds to the cylinder number that is misfiring. A P0302 code, for example, would tell you cylinder number two is misfiring. Unfortunately, a P0300 doesn't tell you specifically which cylinder(s) is/are misfiring, nor why.You should have the dealer or local repair shop scan the computer to find the cause of this misfire.This code can set from a faulty plug,wire,egr valve and other areas of the emission system.Best of luck.

I had this code on my S-10, and figuring it out was a big pain in the you know what. It could either be the coil, or the ignition module. I would start with the coils, they are cheaper. Once you replace them, make sure to disconnect and reconnect the battery to reset the code, if it still comes up, then change the ignition module. You could also be doing damage to the catalytic converter if you are running the truck. I had to replace mine because we ran it trying to figure out what the problem was, and I know that part alone can run 300 bucks or more, so don't run it if you don't have too.
