What class is the Chevy Cruze?

I thought it was around the size of the Ford Fusion, and the starting price they give is similar to the Fusion starting price. But on the ads they keep comparing it to the Focus and Civic. How big is it?
It's really a compact car then? What happened to the Cobalt and why is the Cruze more expensive than other compacts then?
