so this may seem a bit off the wall, but does anyone have any advice/ suggestions (besides, don't try it) on how hard it would be to drop a 292 inline 6 into a 1989 suburban, 4x4, 4 speed. The reason I am contemplating this is because this combination has kind of fallen into place at a very cheap price. And I am a big fan on I6 engines, particularly Chevys. I have had several and driven them hard for a long time. Thanks- Gypsy

I would start by taking measurements of the existing block and the I6 to figure out what needs to be done to support the engine and if it clears the firewall and if there is an adaptor, if needed, for the transmission. I would than think real hard if I want to invest the time and money into this project and if successful contemplate the resale value of the vehicle after it is completed. Consider the power to weight ratio of the vehicle with it's current engine and the I6 and decide whether or not it will be able to get out of it's own way. Good luck.

Don't get me wrong...
I TOTALLY love the I6, and think it's one of the most dependable engines GM has EVER put together.

But, I think you're going to run into problems...
First, getting it connected to the Transmission. I know of no adaptors which do this, so, you'll probably have to have one made...$$$

Secondly, those 6's have a different torque/power range than do the 8's.
I think you may be disappointed (like Zora mentioned) in how the vehicle performs. This coming from the Transmission Gear Ratios being set for the higher RPM/torque ranges generated by the 8 cyl engines. It's possible that you may be able to adjust the Differentials Ratio down some, but that's going to cut into your higher speeds, and remember any change in this is X2 (front and rear).

Just a tip here...
On the clearance (as previously warned) many times when a longer engine is installed, one can do away with the Reciprocating Fan completely, and go with Electric Fans in front of the Radiator.

HA, if this is the first engine swap you've ever done, you got a real experience treat ahead of you !

GOOD LUCK :D
