I checked my timing today on my 1994 gmc 350 5.7 and it was set at 9*BTC is this to far advanced? I heard these engines like 6*BTC. The truck was warmed up and the tan wire with black stripe was unhooked when I checked the timing. The truck runs just fine so should I leave it or go back to 6 or??

I would not advance it past the 6 degree mark to prevent detonation.

This is the first time Ive checked the timing on my truck. I got a new timing light and wanted to check it out.

Also know as pinging, the spark fires too soon in the ignition cycle. On an older vehicle with possible carbon build up advancing the spark past factory spec may not be a good idea.
