Starter problem

yep, you can probably guess what damaged teeth not meshing together sounds like. It wouldn't account for poor idle or shaking.

So would that be a timing thing or carburetor? possible vacuum leak? I know the transmission mount needs replaced. It just recently started shaking bad.

Well not knowing the maintenance history makes things a little more difficult. Do you know how many miles on the plugs, how old the plug wires are, what condition the cap and rotor are in, etc. Start with the ignition system and vacuum leaks and the carburetor should be last.

Plugs and wires about a month old, just changed the fuel filter and checked the hoses. I'm steering more towards the distributor because the volts fluctuate a lot when it idles poor then I turn it off and start it again and runs perfect. The times it runs poorly is becoming more and more often.

I agree with Spriteman. Check those battery cables, all grounds and the connections on your alternator.

Have you checked all your vacuum lines? A truck that old will have some rot. Bad gas maybe? This is the season for water in the tank. Some gas dryer might help.

The fluctuating voltage is caused by the bad idle, as the engine speed drops the voltage output drops.

None of this is related to the noisy starter. You have (at least) a couple issues in this thread.

Yes it's kind of turned into two different subjects hasn't it? I was relating the two at first but they are two different issues. The starter doesn't seem to be as bad lateley. I put a can of Seafoam in the tank yesterday seemed to help a bit.

One last question on this. I'm not sure why exactly it's idling poorly at this point but I know if I turn it off and then start it right back up it does great. Only after I step on it a few times is when it goes back down to the slow and rough idle. I can do the same thing and shut it down and immediately start it again and it runs perfect. It almost seems like when I hit the brake is when it starts doing it.

check for a vacuum leak, including possibly a bad brake booster

Best way to check for a vacuum leak? Soapy water? Starting fluid? Or I guess anything that will cause the engine to Rev or bog down right?

Starting fluid or even WD-40 can help you find a vacuum leak. I'd start around the base of the carb or throttle body, which ever you have. If you notice it more when you hit the brakes, it COULD be the check valve on the power brake booster. I don't think they cost too much and most of your chain auto parts stores carry them.
