Purchased from truck center 2010 5.3L Silverado, brand new in Sept, 2011. After 4,000 miles it began to knock in the mornings, upon start up. Several times now, (20K miles as of 06/11), it knocks in the middle of the day when the motor is warm, however, upon start up only. It quiets down within3 - 6 seconds. Thus far the dealers have just looked at me like I'm speaking a foreign language. They seem to have never heard of this issue. I just watched my girlfriend lemon law a Range Rover and now. What an education! I sure hope the factory satisfies me on this issue or this truck is going back! It's a great truck otherwise and I'd keep it for 10 years if it's reliable.

This is a common complaint on the 5.3 and GM over the years has issued technical service bulletins concerning the piston slap causing the noise. In most cases they claim it is not detrimental to the engine. Are you using a 5W30 synthetic oil with an AC Delco oil filter or an aftermarket oil filter with an anti-drain back valve?

I have this on my suburban 5.3 , seems a little higher oil level shortens the slap time . The short piston skirts rock a bit before oil and heat dampens the slap .
