Shift cable came unhooked on the transmission side on my 97 chevy silverado I

hooked back but it is loose? the plastic lock that hooks to the pin is old and it slides in & out too easy I think with the vibration the plastic lock is going to unhook out of the pin again do I have to replace the whole cable ?
