We woke yesterday morning to our 2008 chev avalanche stolen.
I have lost a spare key but really am positive its in my house somewhere and one of the kids must have hid it. They found my truck but it was torched and ignotion was ripped out. Firstly. .. why would somone rip an ignition out? It was burnt really badly so im wondering how they will be able to tell if it was hot wired or not. Im hoping I find my key but I.know nothing about trucks and or theft. I was told you need a microchip to steal a chev avalanche? I just had a regular key... and I know nothing about micro chips either. Can someone tell me their thoughts? The truck is almost unrecognizable. Im just wondering if they can tell how it was stolen in that shape and why its missing ignition.

The Avalanche is equipped with a Passlock system as described on page 2-28 of the owners manual. The key has to be one that the cars computer has already learned. Was the truck locked with windows rolled up, if so any evidence of forced entry? They may have ripped out ignition in attempt to bypass security.

Passkey III – transponder ignition key
The Passkey III anti-theft system uses a transponder inside the head of the ignition key. The exciter inside the ignition lock cylinder energizes this transponder when the ignition switch is turned on. The transponder transmits a unique signature to the theft deterrent control module. If the key signature transmitted is acceptable to the theft deterrent control module, the theft deterrent control module will transmit fuel enable password to the PCM. If the fuel enable password is correct, the PCM will start the vehicle.
