My 1999 Chevy Silverado is stuck in 4 wheel drive. How can we get it back

in 2 wheel high? My husband helped pull someone out of the mud, now when he pushes the button for 2 wheel (or even 4 wheel auto) it makes a horrible sound, but doesn't switch it over.

1 press button from 4wd low to 4 wd high before going to 3 wd
2 make sure tranny is in N or try inR backing slowly
3 there are 3 parts to system,,,switch,,,solenoid,,,actuator

i had my 99 s 10 refuse to shift into 4wd,,,,actuator and solenoid cost 150 to replace,,,90 parts,,60 labor

try putting the truck in nuetral and then push the buttons.

he should have pulled the other vehicle out with this It would have been easier on the chevy drivetrain.
