Okay, I'm not sure where to post this as I don't see a Technical forum. Maybe I should just stick with the Suburban forum or maybe a vintage forum? I'm new here and haven't yet found them. Below is my post in the Surburban forum and it kind of explains where I've started this situation:
"I have acquired a '99 Suburban that has been rolled and thoroughly roached. The only windows not broken are the rear doors!
The engine and drivetrain in general is in great shape and it runs like a top! I am going to commit a heresy with it and frame over a '66 C-20 onto this chassis. Well, that's what I'm scheming at the moment. Yes, my plan is to keep the '66 chassis and maybe rebuild it later. It has a big-block Vortex motor in it and I am hoping to get this to function without the computer. Is that possible? Are there wiring harnesses available that will do this? The old '66 needs a new wiring harness anyway, so no problem with that. Any ideas?"
I have looked long and hard at this and have decided I need my truck this year, not in 2025. Hence, I would like to just transfer the engine. There's plenty of room in the engine compartment of my '66. However this engine has a lot of hardware and software that are necessary for it to run properly. The smog tag on top of the radiator indicate it has electronic ignition. Likely operated by some kind of computer? Where would this be located? Can all that be transferred into the older truck? Is there a computer available that is independent of the rest of the Suburban? Or was the motor still an independent system at that time? I have been avoiding this vintage of vehicle because of the smog requirements. Looks like I don't have a lot of choice at this point.
So:
Can the engine be transferred to the vintage truck?
Are there controller blocs or computers available for this motor independent of any other computer?
Is the original computer solely concerned with the motor and thus transferrable to the older vehicle?
The engine runs beautifully at present and keeping it that way, that is to say not modifying it, would be what I believe to be the simplest option.
Should I have just continued the thread in the Suburban forum?
By the by, the transmission in the Suburban works well too, if anyone is interested in it.
