I recently replaced the CV axle/joint assembly on the drivers side of my 2004 Chevy Malibu Maxx. I had a tough time getting the circular pin that came with the new assembly onto the gearing so I used the old one because I was able to fit it better. Subsequently, the first time driving it, we hadn't gone 2 miles when, while trying to accelerate from a stoplight, the car wouldn't move. It sounded like it would if the transmission had slipped into neutral, but when I was having no luck getting it to go into gear, and decided to put it in park it made this horrible grinding sound, so I put it back in drive and turned the car off, still in drive, and waited for a friend with a tow strap to come save me.Fast Forward to the next day: We've removed all the CV Axle assembly parts again, and found that the little C-shaped pin that holds the axle and the splines together had popped off in the middle of our drive the day before. I faulted myself, in using the old one, and now figured the new one had been that hard to put on for a reason, and assumed the integrity of the used pin itself was compromised when I put it back on.
Everything seemed to be in place for things to be good to go again, but we are having one problem that I cannot figure out. Upon making right turns, only right turns, there is now a sound that I personally characterize as "the sound made by 2 smooth metal plates gently brushing against one another." The day before, we had replaced the Left Axle assemblydue to standard/typical popping and clicking coming from the drivers side CV during LEFT turns only.
Is this the beginning of the right CV going bad, or is this something entirely different?
A few things to consider:
1) There is no typical clicking or popping that you'd expect to hear with a bad CV.
2) Might it possibly related to the fact that we also replaced brake pads, rotors and a caliper at the same time
3) For the sake of easy explanation, ive acted like it was me who did all the repairs, and all the driving, but in reality, a friend did the majority of the repairs, while my wife did the majority of the driving. When the car suddenly wouldn't move forward while in drive the day before, I guess quite a lot of grinding was done trying to put it in park, then repeatedly shifting out of park, and bacl into it. I figured this was worth noting.
Any help/thoughts?
