Just got a 01 suburban and it has a very loud whinni mg/grinding noise when i accelerate past 20 mph... It sounded like it was coming from the rear end so i checked the oil in the rear differential and it was empty so i filled it and now sounds like it is more in the front it only does ot while pressing the gas, ot stops when i either ker off the gas or ahift into neutral but continues when i press the gas pedel again... It has a grinding noise until i stop but doesnt start till around 20 mph.... And ideas are appreciated

Thanks

well with an empty differential there maybe gear or bearing damage.
do you hear the noise if you raise the engine speed in park?

You are going to have to narrow where the noise is coming from., front or rear, left or right. Does it change when you apply the brakes? Does it change when going through a turn?

After filling the rear differential it sounds like its more from the front... No noise when breaking or turning...

check the wheel bearings and brakes, if 4WD check the front differential

Wouldnt it make noise when turning or breaking if it were the brakes or bearings? The front differential took about 1/2 a quart of oil... The service 4wd light ia on... So might be something with that?

Easy way to check bearings is to jack up front end and see if there is play in front wheel.

Would the front drive shaft make that noise? Not sure but it does have a little play when you try to turn it by hand

You have a loud noise and a warning from the system. Before serious damage occurs perhaps you should take it to a professional?
