Is there a way to check for error codes on an 02 Chevy Malibu?

My check engine light came on and I know with my old car (Dodge Stratus) I could cycle the ignition key 4-6x and it would tell me the error code for what was going wrong when the check engine light came on. Is there a similar procedure for a 02 Chevy Malibu?

Your trick of cycling the ignition key only works for dodge obd-1 computers.
the 02 is obd-ii, which means you must get an obd-ii scantool and connect it to the connector under the dash.

Usually autozone will loan you the tool for free. You can buy them as cheap as $30 at some places.they work for all cars from 1996 to current, I believe in 2014 obd-iii will arrive.
