I’ve got a perplexing electrical problem with my ’93 K1500 Suburban. For a long time in cold weather, I have occasionally seen a flicker of the battery idiot light when the engine is revved near the red line, like just prior to shifting when I have my foot in it. About 3 days ago my battery died and I had it replaced at Sears. The car functioned normally until this morning. Last night the temp dropped into the single digits here in Albuquerque and a brutal snow storm descended on us. When I went to start my suburban this morning the new battery was dead as a door nail. I immediately put my 10 amp charger on it and after about 45 minutes it had enough charge built up to start. After it warmed up for a few minutes, I revved it up a few time to clear its throat. When I revved it up the battery light came on and went off again when it idled down. This behavior went on for a few minutes, until the engine warmed up a bit more and then it stopped and the car again functions normally. Has anybody seen this behavior before? Is this an indication of a bad diode in the rectifier bridge in the alternator? From my perspective this problem is real intermittent, and cold seems to be the only common factor. Is there anything else in the wiring system that could act this way?
