Just bought an AutoMeter in-dash tach (6397),
with the usual 4 wires coming from it, but
also there's a 5th for which the instructions say
I need - an extension wire, the likes of which I
show below.

Question: What purpose does that connection have,
and can I go without it?

I'm hoping it's for the tach's reconfiguration. This
tach's already configured for an 8 cylinder, which
is what I got.

Zora; Here are the correct instructions.

The 5th wire/harness you'll see there depicted;
It's called the "Shift-Lite connector", under the
green wire in the diagram.

(I hope it's clear enough. If not, I'll be able to do
better at my home computer.)

You dont have a Shift Lite, it's the cylinder on the top of the tach in the diagram, and dont intend to use a Shfit Lite for racing, so it doesnt have to be connected

Thanks Zora, just figured out what a Shift-Lite is.
I'd a called it an RPM Pointer that you can set to
whatever RPM you want it to indicate for you.

Say Zora, is there some wire connector I solder
onto the white and red wires, to connect to the
appropriate fusebox slots - via piggyback? I've
never dealt with fusebox connections before.

Is there a guide you can point me to - on how to
do just that? Thank you.

do you know what 3M connector looks like, piece of plastic with two slots and a small metal blade you insert your white or red wire on one side and than clip the connector to a known power source such as the radio power wire and the radio illumination power wire, or the cigarette lighter. You dont have to go all the way to the fusebox. They do make other connectors that you would attach the red or white wire to and then plug into the fuse box. These connectors are available at auto parts stores or Home Depot.
