a 89 chevy suburban.? I own a 89 chevy suburban, and the transmission burned up while I was helping my wifes stepson for hurrcain katrina. So I bought a 84 chevy suburban for the transmission, and I don't know how to change it.I need some help on how to change the transmission. Please Help!

Assuming both vehicles have the same engines and transmissions it won't be that hard. Start by jacking up the vehicles so you can get the transmission out. Rent a transmission jack. Those things are HEAVY and no you can't hold it up by hand or catch it when it falls. Then for the actual work, remove the rear drive shaft. Unbolt it at the rear diff and slide it out of the transmission (assuming 2wd here). Then remove the inspection plate cover to get to the torque converter bolts. Unbolt them. Probably 4 bolts and you'll have to use a span wrench or some other way to turn the motor to get at all of them. Remove the starter, disconnect any linkage and/or electrics, cooling lines etc. Finally with the transmission jack in place unbolt the bell housing from the engine block. Slide the transmission back slightly then lower it down and out. Install is reverse of removal. Make sure to fill the torque converter before installing it. And that it fully engages the pump or you'll be doing this again quickly. Make sure you tighten everything well so it doesn't come loose.

Changing the tranny itself is straightforward. What you see is pretty much what you get. Bell housing bolts, torque converter bolts, front and rear driveshafts, electrical connecters, shift linkage, cooler lines, starter, and it's out of there. Your putting a 84 trans. into a 89. First, make sure the tail shafts are the same. 84 used a cable operated speedometer. Around 89 or 90, GM switched to an electrically operated speedo. If there different, your going to have to change the tailshaft. Also, make sure the tranny's are the same, like as in 700R4. Make sure the trans. pans are the same.
