I have a 2004 Chevy Malibu that sputters when I am at a stop and when I accelerate.?

When I get to about 25 it sputters. I usually have to let off the gas and push it again to get past the sputtering and to continue with acceleration. It will not accelerate while it is sputtering. What is the cause of this? Is it expensive?
