how to i reset the trouble codes on my 2003 chevy silverado?

i want to reset the dtc on my truck so i can determine a hard code from and intermittent code.
how do i reset? remove cable for ten minutes? use code reader to clear dtc? if i can clear the codes for free would be nice.
