I am thinking about buying a 1996 Camaro Z28 with 138k miles for $1,000 from a friend. He says engine is knocking wich he believes could be a rod bearing. Does anyone know around how much it might cost to fix it? Also what else could it be that is making the engine knock? Is this a good deal or not? I really want a project car and i think i can maybe fix it cheap but i dont know as i never owned an LT1 or LSX powered camaro. Help appreciated. thanks

when manufactures build cars they make parts that break after a certain period of time.
Why do you think they pay people to work on cars all day
so take it in and it will be about 1500 dollars
best answer???

the LT1 was a very well built engine, its basicaly a good old chevy 350 with a really nice fuel injection system and reverse flow cooling system. if its a rod bearing it could have damaged the cyclander walls, depending how baddly if at all, it may or may not be fixable. I would seriously have it checked by a mechanic first and see what they think.

Thats a good deal if the body is strait, cause the engine by it self in working order can bring in more than that.

just to let you know, the LT1 and the LSx engines are completely different beasts, gm totaly remade the V8 with the LS1. the blocks are different as night and day.

All in all, I'd offer him 850 and see what he says. cause you'll have to pay for diagnosis, and then your time and money to fix it.

pay the grand it is worth that.. then find ether a good low miles engine or a rebuilt /new engine.. this is a good deal on the car.
good used engine about $600 rebuilt $1200, new $3500 if the engine is not smoking just knocking .. you might be able to put a crank and inserts in it .. $300 plus labor .
