rotors on a 2005 Chevy Malibu 4 cyl? The local shop quoted 486.45. I looked up the cost of parts and its about 110. This labor charge seems a bit high.

if you buy the parts online it could cost you much cheaper. i don't know the labor though. but I think it could cost you $200.

Do it yourself, its really easy . We have a 2007 maxx, for around 100 bucks you can get the pads and roters for the front. Same price for rear . Im from Maine , prices may very you just need something to compress the caliper.[C clamp vice grips] work best !

That's a very simple job. You're getting screwed royally if you pay that much for front brakes. If you're not familiar with how to do it, just get yourself a Haynes manual for your car. They walk you through it step by step. You WILL get your hands dirty because any type of brake job is dirty work. But a little Fast Orange hand cleaner will fix you right up. Then you can say with pride (and money still in your wallet), I'm a do-it-yourselfer.

Doing it yourself will always save money, but do not buy the cheapest parts you can find. Buy quality parts and do the job correctly for the best bang for your money.
As far as shop labor costs if there are repairs you can not do, find a shop you can trust, become a regular customer and you will be treated fairly in most cases. Remember shops will charge a mark up on the parts and have over head; rent, utilities, insurance and labor costs which include FICA, unemployment insurance, medical insurance, workers compensation insurance and taxes to every government agency that knows they exist. Plus the techs and the shop owner have huge investments in tools and equipment to be able to repair your vehicle.

Putting the cost in perspective, a brake job for $485 will take about 2-3 hours of shop time plus all the parts needed and come with some form of a warranty. The repair may only need to be done once or twice during ownership of that car.
The cost would include the service writer taking the vehicle in, inspection, ordering of parts, repair and road test.
When we see our primary care physician for 15 minutes to listen to our heart and lungs only to have them tell us to eat better and exercise more then have to pay $90 - $125, it seems car repair is a bargain compared to health care :D

use to be able to turn the rotors for about 5-15 dollars each and the pads depending what you want are 20-40 dollars a pair, like they say it is an easy job, could take a rookie with a manuel and a couple of tools about 1 hour at most per wheel. good luck and be careful

Anyone else notice the original post it almost two years old? LMAO

No. I sure did not. But the advice is still good for anyone else reading this now.

I didn't notice it either the first time I posted a reply. But, you're right. It's still good advice. I just wonder if he did the job himself or has deep pockets and let the shop do it. Looks like he'll never return and solve the mystery!

Hell, if he'd lived close to me, I'd have offered to do them for $200 bucks and he'd have probably felt like he got one of the best deals ever. I often wonder about people like that.
