How much is a torque converter for a 2001 chevy cavalier?

So I found a nice 2001 cavalier for a good price, but it needs a torque converter...what exactly is a torque converter and how much should it cost?

I'd be really suspicious of a car that needed a new torque converter. Maybe the previous owner liked to rev it to 6000 RPM and drop it into drive? In other words, the transmission may be shot as well.
