My lifters are making a tic tic noise, and I know i'll eventually have to replace 'em. But how long do I have, and how will I know when I need new lifters?
Also, if anyone can tell me what else would need replacing, if anything...and about how much it'll cost??? I know you're not all mechanics, but i'd appreciate any help I could get. Would this be something I could do, or would a repair shop have to do it?
Thanks a million ppls

You have to remove the heads and intake manifold on the V8, which is a lot of work in itself.

A ticking hydraulic lifter is usually caused by not enough oil getting to it, or a clogged oil hole to it.

Make sure that you:

1. Wait until after the engine warms up (and the lifters are pumped with oil) and then listen for the ticking noise. If it goes away don't change the lifters.

2. Change the oil regularly.

3. Don't use a heavier weight oil as it can cause lifter noise.

4. Use a high detergent oil recommended for your vehicle.

Depending on the year of your motor you may be able to just adjust the noise out of them.. if the rockers are adjustable..( the rockers are under the valve covers on each side of the motor.. Here's a link to a Ford 6cyl site of how to adjust the valves. The process is the same just don't follow the rotation. I like to use E.O.I.C. .. you rotate the motor until the intake valve just starts to close the adjust the exhaust valve on that cyl. Then Just as the Exhaust starts to open adjust the intake valve on that cyl. and so forth.
Also an exhaust gasket leak can sound like a ticking lifter.
To replace lifters you have to remove the intake, valve covers and loosen the rockers and remove the push rods.
good luck

i don,t know about the newer chevys but the older ones you could adjust them down some to stop them from ticking. if you have adjustable rockers then you can take the slack out of them by tightening the rockers. the hardess part is removing the intake if you have fuel injection.

always replace the cam...while heads are off check the valves..replace valve seals......you can try ..but you need more than a screwdriver and vice grips...buy a $200 tool set from sears and a how to rebuild your SB chevy from books a million or amazon.com
