sounds like you broke the pin and collar on the collumn.me too.well,i put in a floor shifter.the shifter assy.is cheap.you need to get different linkage.if you are real lucky you can get it all at a junkyard.maybe you have a friend who can cut and bend the old linkage to fit.it can be done,i did it myself.please,dont give up this classic because you cant fix it.ask around small shops.these guys are GOOD! wear your seatbelt.
