I am trying to put speakers in the doors on my car, and i have read forum after forum about this topic, and they all say there is a small 'C' shaped clip just behind the crank. I have messed with this for an hour now, and i don't see any clip. I even bought the tool to remove the crank, however without a clip, i have no use for it.

You don't have to see the clip. Just push the tool in behind, from the same angle as the handle points. That's the way they're always lined up. Why do you think the handle of the tool is so long? To reach past the crank handle.

The tool will grab the outter ends of the "C", and spread it and push it off. When you're done, put the clip back on the crank, then just rotate it until the splines mesh, and push it back on.

Here's a couple pics that should help;

They're always mounted in this direction;

This is on a different kind of handle (door opening handle), but it shows good how it works;

You shouldn't push the panel back at all, or pull on the handle. Just slip the tool in between, from the direction of the knob, and it virtually does the rest of the job itself.

It has a clip, but the more you try to pull out on the crank to see, the harder it is to see, you have to push in around the crank to get a look, the clip should have a raised area in the middle of the clip, I have better luck looking down, turning the crank until I see the raised spot and using a slim but stiff wire making a U in it and hooking it and pulling it up. Hope this helps.

Push back on the door trim panel with a wide blade screwdriver or scraper...it's there look for a groove in the handle. Mean little things they are lol.
