How do I put the outer door handles back on 91 k1500

I bought a used 91 k1500 it has no outer door handles so I bought new handles and rods. I can't figure out how to install them tho. When I attach the rod to the arm on the handle first it won't fit in the hole. I tryed to connect it by nounting the handle and attaching from the inside that is nearly impossible. Please someone help me with this. It is the rod the has a red tip and pushes down vertically.
