How can I increase the horsepower in my 03 Chevy Malibu LS?

I know to add a cold air intake which is first on the list, but I cant afford a supercharger or turbocharger. I also would like to increase the mpg but I am willing to sacrifice some mpgs for horsepower. This is the stock LS with a V6, 3.1L, 170 Horses, and 190 lbs/ft torque. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Go to an exhaust shop and ask them to build you a custom exhaust using 'cherry bomb' mufflers, they'll know what you are asking for.

Cheap glass pack mufflers that are about as free flowing as you can get and still be legal.

opening up airflow in the exhaust will increase fuel economy and horse power, win win.
