You probably have an old engine in that old car, if so you can't pump too much more HP through it without blowing seals. In fact if it is the original engine and not been rebuilt you have lost a lot of horsepower to begin with. The acceleration problem is probably from a clogged up carburator and possibly bad plugs. Change out the plugs to a hotter burning type and get better plug wires, clean out the carb and adjust the timing.
Generally, more air and more fuel means more compression and more power in basic terms. A good place to start is freeing up the breathing of the engine, so less restrictive exhaust systems will help give a small amount of boost. Go with a performance based muffler. Next increase the amount of air coming into the engine, get a less restrictive air cleaner. A larger carburator will also provide more fuel to each cylinder, with the added air coming in and the more exhaust flow the engine will breathe better and be more effecient.
Ideally you would want to start with a whole new engine and build it up from the inside out, but if you have limited time and money then the better air flow is cheap and quick, then get into adding more fuel with a larger more performance based carb and maybe a camshaft swap should be all an older engine can handle.
