hard to stop vehicle

have an 05 Av that required considerable pressure to stop quickly. Even a normal stop requires more pressure than any other vehicle I've ever known. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any solutions. A friend recently told me that this was a common problem with the anti-lock brake system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

how about some more background? did you just get the vehicle? how many miles on the brakes? did you check the master cylinder? do you have a check engine light on?
