Hard Brake

I have a 1999 Suburban K1500; it started with a hard brake from time to time. It would get hard, then soften as I held the brake or pumped it. Then, started happening more often and I noticed a groaning type of noise started to accompany it. Any ideas? Braking is starting to get real interesting, I have slowed down to compensate, but, i need to get this fixed. It is intermittent issue and now even happens when I am driving & don't hit the brakes - getting the groaning noise.

groaning noises are usually when the pads have worn out and scraping the rotors. A hard brake pedal is usually a problem with the brake booster, either the vacuum line or the booster itself.
