If your 4L60e automatic transmission leaks from the rear of the transmission, you most likely have a failed speed sensor 0-ring.
I have a 1994 Camaro 3.4 v6.
I had a leak form from my transmission that left a small puddle of fluid in my driveway. This happened all of a sudden. No gradual leaking. It wasn't leaking one day and was the next. I originally thought it was coming from the pan.
The next day the puddle was 10 times as big.
After further inspection, I found the leak. I removed the 6mm bolt that secures the speed sensor to the tailshaft of the transmission on the drivers side of the car, removed the speed sensor and inspected the o-ring. It was worn out from age.
After calling around to 3 auto parts stores for the o-ring, which nobody could get, I was told I had to replace the entire speed sensor because you can't get just the o-ring. I went to a NAPA store and they managed to find an o-ring the same diameter as the factory one but the thickness was larger. I tried it but it would not seat into the transmission.
As a last ditch effort, I called a Chevrolet dealership. They told me the O.E.M. speed sensors were discontinued so finding the seal would be next to impossible. Then he said, "well would you look at that. There is a part listed for just the seal and we actually have the o-ring seal in stock".
It cost $5.50, which is a whole lot better than the $50 plus for a new part I don't need. No more transmission leak.
For those who may run into the same problem, you can contact Chevrolet for the part.
