Went to open the door on my 08 suburban and the handle came off - Dealer said it was because it was cold - This is Virginia not Wisconsin - It was below freezing but not by much - Door handle should not come off - $341.77 later I have a new door handle - have always been a Chevy person - but .... Anyone else have this problem?

My 1997 has done it twice. The cold definitely helps it to break. The handle is cast aluminum and it gets brittle when exposed to cold temps.

Ouch - $341.77 sounds a bit extreme - I can't remember what I paid but I just bought the part from the GM dealer where I was and put the part on myself.

I just went to an online GM dealership and they had 2008 Burb handles ranging from $17 - $35 - Part #36 below on this link - http://parts.nalleygmc.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=372842&ukey_make=1024&ukey_model=14543&modelYear=2008&ukey_driveLine=6212&searchString=door+handle

Here's the part listed on Amazon $30 - I'm not sure it's the exact one for your burb but it should be close - http://www.amazon.com/Genuine-20828237-Exterior-Driver-Handle/dp/B005VUZQ58/ref=au_as_r?ie=UTF8&Make=Chevrolet%7C47&Model=C1500%20Suburban%7C425&Year=1997%7C1997&carId=002&n=15684181&s=automotive&vehicleType=6

So they charged you $300 for labor. This should have been a one hour job - I can do one in that time and I'm not a pro mechanic. Your total bill should have been less than $150 if the hourly labor rate is around $100 which is high in my book. If I'm you I'm at the General Managers schedule for a sit down to discuss how they plan on ripping me off in the future.

I think you got 'misshandled' by the dealer too! They should never have charged you that much for replacing a handle

I hope you got a kiss and some KY jelly along with that handle.

That job is almost all LABOR, and it take about 30 minutes. At $100 and hour...well you can do the math. With regard to ever having your problem...well we've ALL been screwed over at one point or another in our life, but I've avoided paying that much for a door handle.
