Chevy silverado 98 2500 6.5 turbo diesel Loss of Power and Tons of Black Smoke ?

The truck has lost significant power. When I go up a medium incline, I have to floor the pedal but the truck just does not get moving. It is also pouring out huge quantities of thick black smoke,
Any ideas of what may be wrong would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
