We just bought a Chevy Avelanche December of 2005. A 2005 model and within a month noticed the Truck making a noise from what we thought the steering callum. It's been in the dealership 5 times for the same reason, they think they are fixing it but after it comes back out of the shop within a few days it is worse then before. It feels as it is in the steering rack but you can feel it on the bottum of the truck. Chevy are aware of the problem and have admited that it is a design defect, with the part. So I am wondering if anyone else who drives a Chevy Avalanche has a crunching sound when driving slowly and turning the steering. I appreciate your answers. This is a serious inquiry. Thank you
or any chevy utility truuck or suv for that matter

This is a very common problem with all GM truck frames. I had a 02 2500HD and the steering felt like it was loose in the column, and it made a loud popping noise when I would turn at low speeds. GM recommends that a bushing/bearing in the column is replaced. The popping noise comes from some frame busings in the front. There is a repair kit from GM that contains some shims that will take care of the problem. If you're not experienced with this kind of stuff, take it to the dealer.
