After a fair bit of research and looking around, I beleive the Cobalt SS Supercharged is the best 'bang for it's buck' for my requirements: (2006, coupe, nice styling, fits in my range of $17,000 or less, manual transmission, decent bhp), plus you can add a performance pack for $750 that will take it to 245bhp. Can anyone offer any alternatives that come close to this for what I require (excluding the Mustang.)?

I got 350 h/p out of a 2.3 Quad 4. No turbo/supercharger.

But i cant think of anything better then you got listed.

Its a Chevy, if you dont know

whats is a cobalt? sounds crappy
Honda's are your best bang for your buck!

Wait till summer they are coming out with a Cobalt Turbo charged thats going to produce even more bang for the buck it will produce 260 horsepower not bad for a 4 banger.

the SS is nice but for 17K, you can do better. if you look around, you might be able to find deals for the same price on the following cars. i have seen some sell for 17K so i know it's not impossible to find them.

Nissan 350z (easy to find for 17k and under)
Mazda RX8
Infiniti G35 (sedans are plenty at 17K coupes pop up once in a while)
Honda S2000 (another easy find)
Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX (second generation, enormous potential)
BMW M3 (E36) -240hp rwd

edit: make sure you know what you are looking at. the SS non-supercharged version retails for 17K but only has 173HP. the 750 stage 2 upgrade you are talking about applies only to the supercharged 20K version that come stock with 200hp......

i don't understand the question, but the new Cabolt is a nice looking car, especially the coupe SS. nice choice.
