Can I change the oil filter in a Chevy Cobalt without draining the oil first?

I'm asking this because I had the car for a year and a half and I change the oil when the computer display says "oil life 25%", but the first time I changed it I couldn't find where the oil filter was, so I only replaced the oil.

And after looking on the internet where the oil filter is, I got a filter and oil and started to change them, at "25% oil life"

But I didn't have a socket for the oil filter cap (but I got one now), so I changed only the oil about October 1st .

And now I'm thinking the oil filter is getting very nasty in there.

I'm wondering if anyone has taken off the oil filter cap with the oil still in the pan since the filter is above the pan.

A five quart container of 5w-30 is over $12.00 and I just changed it a few weeks ago.

Should I play it safe and get more oil?
