I have a 2005 chevy malibu, took it in for service and I was told I needed to replace my ball joint? however after doing extensive search online I cannot find this part for my car. Does the part go by another name or will it have to be ordered thru GM directly? Plus how do you find out if there has been any recalls? any information would help. Thanks

Sounds to me like the typical mechanic fishing for more money/work. My VW only now is needing new front ball joints, and it's a '98 with 210,000km. Do you hear crashing sounds from the front when you hit a bump? That would mean the mechanic is actually telling the truth, and the Chevy is so badly built that you DO need new ball joints in 4 years of use. Have another shop specifically check the ball joints.

check for control arms, some ball joint designs are not serviceable.

Your car has lower ball joints. They are connected to the lower control arm. Sometimes you have to replace the entire lower control arm due to the way it's made.
