Are radio interfaces necessary on an 03 suburban?

I recently purchased an 03 suburban and it came with am aftermarket stereo. The battery was loose on the vehicle and I think it shorted out the interface that was installed. (Or that's what the people at the audio place told me). Before I took it in to the audio place I tried wiring the radio directly to the battery and it wouldn't turn on. So I'm guessing the people from the audio shop were right. They tried to charge me 250 dollars for an interface but when I look for one online I see some that are a whole lot cheaper. Do I need to go with the 250 dollar one for my truck or can I use a cheaper one ? Or better yet just bypass the whole thing?

I know it's all a bit confusing but I appreciate any help. I'm not the greatest with radios.

Please provide a link to what you are calling a radio interface.
