The car is a 1999 Chevy Malibu 3.1 V6

I took apart the engine to put new gaskets, and I pulled out the intake and exhaust valves and rods, but I dont know how to reinstall because theres three long rods and three short rods...

My questions is which ones go on the intake and which on the exhaust?...I would like to know WITHOUT looking at Haynes or Chiltons...

Thank You
Thanks alot, NOW lastly...standing in front of the hood looking at the head, from left to right, front of motor to rear of motor, I need to know which is intake and what is exhaust?

I am assuming that you are talking about the push rods.

There are colored markings on the push rods, but this may be worn away with age

The intake push rods are marked yellow and are 5 3/4 inches long

The exhaust push rods are marked green and are 6 inches long.

VERY IMPORTANT NOT TO GET THESE MIXED UP

It will be very helpful to go to the Auto Zone website. There is a Do-It-Yourself section. Here you will have access to a service manual for this engine. You can not download it but you can print out whatever pages you need. You have to register. Registration is free and you are under no obligation.
