I am currently looking at a 98 Chevrolet Cavalier. It has 158,000 miles which is a lot but I keep hearing that these cars last forever. They're asking $3,500 for it which I think is reasonable. What do you think of this buy? The car is in good condition. I am NOT a car literate person so I would appreciate an easy to understand answer. =]

You should run away. This is not a good deal for you. $1700 to $2000 is more like it, and even then it better be in great shape. No dents, no scratches, no smoke from the exhaust when starting or running. Go to www.kbb.com which is Kelly Blue Book for price estimates.

I like Cavs, I had one, but at 10 years old you are looking at a worn out interior, unknown transmission, worn out air conditioner, worn out struts, leaking radiator, and leaking heater core. Look underneath the engine to see how bad the oil is leaking.
