I just picked up a 98 Cavalier with the 2.2L engine about 6 weeks ago. When I got it and up to last week is was bitterly cold here, most days below freezing. I've had no issues with it during that time :) but just in the last few days I have noticed that the normal operating temp has been climbing.

During the deep freeze the "normal" running temp was about 180-190 and creeping up to 200 in traffic. Now that ambient is in the high 50's, the running temp has been 200-205 and in traffic up to 225. During that time it never went higher than this but I can't recall the electric radiator fan kicking in at any time.

I have normal heat in the cabin, no leaks that I can see and the temp never went above 225 using my bluetooth OBD2 reader on my phone.

Does anyone know the temp range where it's supposed to turn on the fan? I thought I read somewhere that just turning on the AC will bypass the temp setting and turn on the fan?

Not even sure there is an issue, but it will soon get warmer out and I don't want to overheat on the first warm day in traffic.

the fans should come on with the AC on.
Otherwise they come on in the 215 to 225 range.

Yeah, I've got no fan with the AC on, and the fuse is good. With the AC on I removed the fan relay and it didn't click when pulled it or replaced it.

without the fans it will start to overheat when the ambient temperature gets higher. You will need a test light or voltmeter to track down the problem.

But if it was bad, would I still get a reading from the OBD2? If I unplug it, the coolant temp reading drops to -40 on the OBD

from the link in the my previous post, unplugging it is infinite resistance
"Low coolant temperature produces a high resistance (100,000 ohms at -40°C)"

you need to know the resistance when it is at 225
