I have a '96, diesel, 2500 Chevy Suburban. It runs great, but over the last few months or so it has developed a strange symptom.
After I start it (I have no trouble starting it), and it has run for a few seconds to a few minutes, the heater fan and radio will quit working, and the seatbet light, the Low Coolant light, and the ABS lights on the right side of the dash come on (no warning lights on the left side of the dash come on). In a few seconds the radio and heater fan start working again and the seatbelt, low coolant, and ABS lights go out.
This sequence will happen about four times and then it will simply stop doing these strange things until the next time I start the truck again.
This whole time the truck is running just fine.
Any thoughts?
Thank you in advance,
Bill

They are probably controlled by the BCM, body control module, and you may need to have it checked for codes. The other possibility is the connector to the BCM is corroded not fully seated, etc.

zora,
I appologize for the 10 month delay in reponding to your post. I only just now found your reply to my post.
I'm having issues with finding my way around in the forum. I'll learn, but it takes me a while.
I thank you for the information. I'll look into your suggestion.
Thanks again.
Bill

VanGo, thank you for your reply.
Nope. I'm stumped.
Here's something I just posted to my FaceBook hive mind.

I have a problem. No, not that kind.
As many of you know, I drive a1996 Chevy Suburban K2500, 4WD, with a 6.5 L diesel engine.
I'm having a strange electrical problem with the truck.
Here it is. At seemingly random intervals, and just after starting the truck, the heater fan, and radio will stop working. At the same time the seat belt light, low coolant light, and ABS light will come on (all are on the right side of the dash). In anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes the fan and radio come back on and the afore mentioned lights go off. Then, again at some random time ( a few seconds to a few minutes), the whole thing happens again. This cycle can happen four or five times, then it just stops happening until the next time I start the truck.
Of late The windshield washer pump has become erratic. That's erratic not erotic. Though when I hold the pump in my hand... well.... Sometimes it sprays and sometimes it doesn't. I changed the pump, and checked the hose for clogs, but that doesn't seem to have fixed the issue.
I posted this in http://chevyforum.org/suburban and got the suggestion that it might be the Body Control Module (BCM), or the connector to it. It's also been suggested that it might be a corroded ground connection in the associated wiring.
The washer pump problem might be the Windshield Wiper Control Module (WCM), the pulse board (if that isn't part of the module) or, again, a bad ground.
Now, I'd be happy to disconnect the grounds and clean them, check the connectors to the modules, etc.
That is, I would if I could find them. Herein lies the rub.
I have a schematic that shows me the ground points. It's an electrical schematic. It doesn't show physical locations. I went to the library. The nice woman at the research desk got me the electrical diagram but couldn't find me a document that shows me the physical locations of these ground points. Nor could I find the physical location of the BCM or the WCM.
The Chilton manual doesn't seem to have this data either.
I don't have access to a full on shop manual set so I can't comment on that.
I've spent a week searching the Internet for information that might help. No joy.
Can any of you out there in the great hive mind point me to the documents that will give me the ground point locations, and the BCM and WCM locations?
In the immortal words of those imaginary bucolic bumpkins from the Bartles and James ad “Thank you for your support.”

This is as far as I have gotten with the problem.

VanGo,
No. I never did.
I seem to be having problems getting my posts to post. I just sent a rather longer reply but it isn't showing up.

Sorry about the delay in posting.
I blew up my hard drive and had to rebuild.
Still no progress on the electrical problem.

Yeah, I had a similar problem on an '82 ElCamino. It was a ground behind the dash.
My '93 Suburban has a slow battery discharge. I've got it narrowed down to the instrument panel too.

zora, VanGo,
Thank you both for your replies.
I'll start chasing grounds as the weather permits.
Bill
