Had this suburban for 8 years and been very reliable except for transmission issues.
about 6 years ago the tranny went out,
I bought a used low mileage 4l60e out of an astrovan, before installing it I threw it on a engine stand and drained/cleaned everything, installed new front and rear seal, and put new filter and oil in it.
its ran fine since but last year noticed a fluid leak from the yoke on the driveshaft.
theres an o-ring in the tail end of the tranny that keeps fluid from leaking out the driveshaft yoke... i never replaced this oring and just kept the fluid topped off (adding a quart every couple weeks)
i let my nephew borrow the suburban for a few weeks and evidentally he cant read a dipstick cause when i got the truck back it was severely overfull (a couple inches above hashed dipstick marks) and shifting really hard.
I removed some fluid with thin tubing but fluid smells a little burnt now and still shifting really hard (like it did before tranny went out the first time)
i parked the truck assuming it would need a new tranny and havnt drove it for a year.
The ol ladys van just crapped out and really need the suburban back in service.
I just am not sure what to do, change fluid/filter and see if that helps.
Change transmission (found used low mileage 4l60e for $450)
or have tranny shop look it over (really cant afford this option
im pretty sure i have no check engine light so no tranny codes triggered.
any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
