I have a 1987 Chevy Silverado step-side. I get 8 to 12 miles per gallon. It has a small block 350, Edelbrok carburetor, intake, and valve covers. Headman headers and flow masters exhaust. I need some way to improve the gas milege, under $600 would be nice.

Sounds as if someone built it for performance and not economy. That being said, the first place to start would be to install smaller main jets in the carb. Dirt cheap and easy to do. You should be able to buy them at any performance shop for just a few bucks a pair. Buy a few different sizes and experiment until you find the compromise between performance and economy you like. I would recommend starting at two sizes smaller than what is in it right now and go from there, just don't get too lean as you can create overheating issues. Good luck

swap the mechanical fan and water pump for an electric fan and water pump. Easy to do, and got me 4 extra MPG on my '92 silverado stepside.

shouldnt cost you more than $350 tops. look at styling concepts or LMC truck for parts.
