85 Exhaust modification

So I have an 85 C10 and the guy that had it before me redid the exhaust on his own, took off the cat, the muffler is now where the cat should be and honestly I'm not happy with the way it sounds and it's not legal. I was thinking about taking everything off, putting in a cat, cutting the exhaust apart putting the muffler where it should be and put everything back together. I would get a new exhaust but it's a lot of money and everything I had is still in good shape. I wanted an opinion on where this is a good idea or just a waste of time. Thanks for looking!

sounds more like a decision you have to make, how important is the illegality to you? Easiest thing to do would be to just replace the muffler with one that gives you the sound you want.
